The Handbrake of Change

How do you keep the wheels turning during change, regardless if it calls for scaling up or scaling down?

Meaningful change takes time and there is a risk that during times of change, a “handbrake” is applied to the business.

I’ve seen the same emotion apply the handbrake time after time, uncertainty.

When your team is disconnected from the change or doesn’t understand why change is coming, motivation is replaced with distraction.

Being clear during times of change is important. You need to be available to your team with a simple, purpose-aligned message and be open to questions.

I’ve always had the same two rules when running "Ask Me Anything" sessions:

  • Be respectful and constructive with your feedback

  • Be prepared for an answer you were not expecting

Even better, regardless of if change is needed, provide regular updates to your team.

Regularly share the purpose of the business and performance of the business so there will be no “surprises” when change comes.
