I recently sat down with a start-up MSP, I asked them to tell me what the business stood for and was shown their values - they were great and everything I would have expected from this entrepreneur, but it didn't answer my question.
Think of it this way:
Values are how we behave; they are a guide to help us hire, evaluate and fire. These are typically for internal use only, yes they are used externally also but in my experience our clients look at our values once they understand what value a relationship would bring to their business
Purpose is our “why, who and what” - this is both internal and external:
Why are we important?
Who are we important to?
What will be the benefit of working with us?
Centa Partners’ purpose is "helping businesses to simply connect their purpose, process and people to accelerate success and drive sustainable growth"
This purpose is simple to remember and share and it gives everyone who reads it a clear understanding of what we do, who we do it with and the benefits of working with us.
Use this purpose to then build your values and then move on to your objectives, knowing all objectives need to align with your purpose and values.
