You’ve been thrown into a leadership role during a period of uncertainty.

The team is anxious, morale is low and everyone’s waiting for answers.

It’s a tough position, but leadership is about providing clarity when things are unclear.

Here’s what I’ve learned in these moments:

💡 Over-Communicate and Be Transparent

People crave certainty during tough times, even if the news isn’t what they want to hear. Be clear about the situation, the challenges and what’s being done to address them. Trust is built through transparency.

💡 Focus on What You Can Control

You can’t solve everything overnight, but you can create a plan for what’s within your control. Break down larger problems into smaller, actionable steps. This keeps the team focused on progress and avoids feeling overwhelmed by the bigger picture.

💡 Acknowledge the Emotions

Uncertainty brings fear, frustration and doubt. Don’t sweep it under the rug. Acknowledge how the team is feeling and provide a space for them to express it. People are more likely to rally behind you if they feel seen and heard.

💡 Lead with Purpose

In difficult times, your team needs more than just a plan, they need a reason to believe in what they’re doing. Connect your actions to the larger purpose of the business and remind them of the bigger picture.

Leadership in uncertainty is about guiding people through the fog, not just around it. Clear communication, focused action and a strong sense of purpose make all the difference.

How do you lead in uncertain times?
